Le petit et remarquable musée de Svanétie à Mestia renferme des trésors, icônes, croix , bijoux, manuscrits, objets traditionnels, tous très bien mis en valeur. Tous les objets religieux ont été cachés par la population pendant les années communistes.

The small and remarkable museum of Svanetia in Mestia contains treasures, icons, crosses, jewels, manuscripts, traditional objects, all very well emphasized. All the religious pieces have been hidden by the population during the Communist period.

De plus, une grande citation du géographe grec Strabon, mort en 25 après JC, donne peut-être l’explication du mythe de la Toison d’or : les Svans de son époque utilisaient des peaux de mouton qu’ils déposaient au fond des rivières pour récupérer les paillettes d’or charriées par les torrents.

Moreover, a long quotation from the Greek geographer Strabo, who died in 25 AD, gives perhaps the explanation of the myth of the Golden Fleece : the Svans of his time used sheep skins which they deposited at the bottom of the rivers to recover the gold nuggets carried by the streams.

En fait, Jason nous poursuit. Après avoir dormi près de son lieu de départ en Turquie, nous sommes aujourd’hui, après être descendus de la montagne, à Koutaïssi, la seconde ville de Géorgie, où il serait venu réclamer la Toison d’or au roi Eétès.

In fact, Jason is after us. After sleeping near his place of departure in Turkey, we are today, after descending from the mountain, in Kutaisi, the second city of Georgia, where he is supposed to have come to claim the Golden Fleece from King Aetes.

C’est Médée, la fille du roi, qui lui aurait permis de s’enfuir avec celle-ci. Pour retarder son père dans sa traque du voleur, elle aurait (dixit wikipedia) tout simplement découpé son frère en morceaux, éparpillé façon puzzle. Malin, car le père a ainsi perdu du temps à recoller les morceaux afin de lui donner une sépulture correcte et les Argonautes ont mis les voiles.

Medea, the king’s daughter, helped him to escape with the Fleece. To delay his father in his hunt for the thief, she (dixit wikipedia) simply cut up her brother into pieces, scattered like a puzzle. Smart girl, as her father lost time putting together the pieces to give him a proper burial and this allowed the Argonauts to escape.

Koutaïssi en soi a peu d’intérêt. Sa cathédrale a été sacrée patrimoine mondial par l’UNESCO puis mise presque aussitôt sur liste des trésors en péril par cette même UNESCO. La raison, une réfection horrible, avec des toits en tôle peinte et une immonde « prothèse » en métal à l’arrière de la nef.

Koutaissi has little interest, by itself. The cathedral was crowned World Heritage by UNESCO and then put almost immediately on the list of treasures in danger by this same UNESCO. The reason, a horrible repairs, with painted metal roofs and an ugly metal « prosthesis » at the back of the nave.

Par contre le monastère de Gelati à 10 km est une merveille. C’est en fait un ensemble de bâtiments avec une « université » voulue par David le Constructeur, le roi emblématique du pays au XIIème siècle.

On the contrary the Gelati monastery, 10 kms away,  is a marvel. It is in fact a collection of buildings with a « university » wanted by David the Builder, the emblematic king of the country in the 12th century.

De très belles fresques dans l’église et les chapelles et une grande mosaïque d’origine au dessus de l’autel.

Very beautiful frescoes in the church and chapels and a large mosaic dating back to the construction time, above the altar.

Mais pour nous, les mosaïques de Saint-Sauveur-in-Chora à Istanbul qu’on a découvert l’an dernier restent inégalées.

But still for us the most beautiful mosaics are those of the church of the Holy-Saviour-in-Chora in Istanbul.

Ici aussi, on réhabilite mais en remplaçant les tôles par des tuiles vernissées comme à l’origine. Ce sera superbe quand tout sera fini.

Here too, rehabilitation is on its way., but they replace the metal sheets on the roofs with glazed tiles as originally. It will be superb when everything is over.

Internet nous avait suggéré d’aller dormir au « Camping complex Europa » à l’entrée de la ville. Pourquoi pas ? Sauf que ces coordonnées GPS correspondent à un cimetière, et pas de complexe en vue. Humour géorgien ?

Internet suggested we d’go to sleep at the « Camping complex Europa » at the entrance to the town. Why not ? Except that these GPS coordinates correspond to a cemetery, and no complex in sight. Georgian sense of humor?

Finalement on a dormi sur le parking de l’hôtel Eleganti (N 42°16.388 E 42°.41.823) à Koutaïssi et pu profiter de la climatisation du salon de l’hôtel. Là, surprise : dans la bibliothèque, on découvre, bien en évidence, des poèmes d’Omar Khayyam et une biographie d’Edith Piaf, le tout en géorgien !

Eventually we stayed in the car park of hotel Eleganti (N 42 ° 16.388 E 42 ° .41.823) in Koutaïssi and could benefit from the air conditioning of the lounge of the hotel. There, a surprise : on the book shelves, Omar Khayyam’s poems and a biography of Edith Piaf , translated in Georgian!

Ca a été l’occasion de causer avec Mikheil, un client buveur de bière (par litres apparemment) et russophobe qui a invité Chon à un slow sur la musique de Joe Dassin sortant de son portable. Surréaliste !

It was an opportunity to chat with Mikheil, a beer drinker (per liter apparently) and a Russophobe who invited Chon for a slow on the music of Joe Dassin coming out of his smart phone. Surrealist!
