Après une deuxième nuit à Melnik au pied du village, on est monté 100 kms plus au nord vers le monastère de Rila. En pleine montagne, au bord d’un torrent tumultueux, c’est le plus grand et le plus bel édifice religieux du pays. Une très grande enceinte pavée, blanche et noire elle aussi, délimite une grande cour où se trouve l’église.

After a second night in Melnik close to the village, we moved on 100 kms further north to the Rila Monastery. In the mountains, close to a raging torrent, it is the largest and most beautiful religious building in the country. A very large paved enclosure, white and black too, defines a large courtyard where the church is located .

  

Celle-ci est peinte du sol au plafond, dehors comme dedans, de fresques et couverte d’icônes à l’intérieur : c’est vraiment extraordinaire, même pour des gens qui comme nous ne sommes pas bien religieux. Et si aux Météores un pope a refusé à Chon d’entrer dans l’église en pantalon, ce n’a pas été le cas à Rila. Un bon point pour les pappas bulgares !

It is painted from floor to ceiling, inside and outside, , covered with frescoes and icons inside : it’s really extraordinary  , even for people like us who do not care about religions. And if a priest in the Meteora refused Chon to enter the church in pants , this was not the case in Rila . A good point for Bulgarian pappas !

Nous avons fini la journée devant des truites grillées délicieuses (5€ par truite !), en regardant le Pascal Sevran local officier sur « Folklore TV », chaine que le patron du resto  avait mis spécialement pour nous ! Quant au camping zodiac, (15 €) en pleine nature au dessus du monastère, nous y avons  dormi comme des sonneurs, accompagnés par le ronflement du torrent.

We ended the day in front of delicious grilled trouts ( € 5 per trout !) , Watching local dances on « Folklore TV », the channel that the owner of the restaurant had put on especially for us ! And we slept at  the zodiac camping (€ 15) in the countryside above the monastery, accompanied with the loud music of the river.

Nous sommes maintenant redescendus vers la frontière grecque dans un petit camping (15 €, N41.454200 E23.363300) tenu par un jeune couple anglais. Apparemment il y a une petite communauté de britanniques par ici : une maison correcte avec 3000 m2 de terrain se vend 40 000 € et le climat n’a rien à voir avec les brumes de Manchester !

We are now back down near the Greek border in a small campsite (15 € ) run by a young English couple. Apparently there is a small British community here : a proper house with 3000 square meters  of land is worth € 40,000 and the climate has nothing to do with the mists of Manchester!
